The days are heating up with summer fast approaching, which marks a great time to visit the Grand Canyon, Sedona or the Mogollon Rim in Arizona. Camping, day hikes or a visit to Sedona to enjoy one of many attractions would be a great way to spend spring in Arizona. Whether you are heading up north or staying in the valley, you want your feet healthy and comfortable. Many individuals are familiar with common Bunions occurring on the big toe; however, another form of a Bunion can present on the outside of the foot called a Bunionette or Tailor’s Bunion. A Tailor’s Bunion received its name because of the position a tailor commonly spent his/her days. This position left the outside edge of the foot, specifically around the fifth toe, to rub against the ground that frequently developed into a bunion.
A Bunionette, or more simply an enlargement found on the outside of the fifth toe, can be painful especially when it is large enough to be irritated while wearing shoes. Bunionettes usually develop slowly over time and can be aggravated while wearing narrow shoes. Some foot types predispose patients to Bunionettes regardless of the type of shoes worn.
Common Signs and Symptoms of a Bunionette:
Red, swollen or callused
Pain and burning over bump
Worsens over the day and does not radiate
Narrow shoes worsen pain
Barefoot usually relieves pain
There are many conservative treatment options for Bunionettes. Depending on the severity, conservative options may suffice. Obtaining wider shoes, padding and reducing the callus may provide adequate relief. Prescription orthotics may be needed depending on the patients foot type and severity of Bunionette. Pain can be managed with anti-inflammatory medication. Surgical treatment may be indicated if conservative treatment fails. Surgery would reduce the bump by realigning the bones in the outside portion of the foot.
